On a drive back to Hilo from Kona, I turned off Highway 19 onto the Old Mamalahoa Highway. I came across this old plantation home. The yard was overgrown with weeds, and the house was showing signs of decades of neglect. I sat for awhile and tried to imagine the house when it was in it's youth, smelling of pine sap and new paint. One day, the bulldozers will come to wipe the slate clean, making way for a new beginning. Photo:

The verbal imagery created by your description makes this picture all the more beautiful! It made me feel a little sad ... we see all these huge homes being built along the Hamakua Coast; awkward and out of place. Yet this home, with a cultural and historical connection to its place, will one day be erased.
